Pressing and Pelletizing      Choosing a Laboratory Press

Your choice of a laboratory press will depend primarily on the amount of pressure required, the need for uniformity, and the number of samples you press per day. The diameter of the pellet to be pressed and the nature of the sample material and binder determine the necessary pelletizing pressure, which may vary from two tons to thirty-five tons. Motorized presses will provide greater convenience, yield more sample uniformity and increase sample throughput as compared to manual presses. SPEX SamplePrep offers 12-ton and 25-ton manual presses, the air-actuated 25-ton 3628 Bench-Press, and the fully automated 35-Ton  X-Press, Model 3630.

This unique programmable laboratory press performs the entire pressing cycle with the push of a single button.

The 3630 X-Press is a 35-ton programmable hydraulic press intended for the repetitive pressing of 3630 X-Presssample pellets for spectroscopy. Automation greatly improves sample uniformity and frees the technician for other tasks, as this press will operate unattended.

In automatic mode, this press performs a complete pressing cycle. On starting, it goes to a selected pressure, maintains the pressure for a set time, and drops the pressure to zero over
a programmed interval. On completion of the cycle, the press returns the platen back to the base position and makes an audible signal indicating it is ready for the next sample.

The 3630 accepts all SPEX SamplePrep pellet dies and can also be operated manually as a simple motorized press whose functions are under direct user control.

Whether it is to be a 13 mm disc of KBr for IR analysis or a 40 mm pellet for XRF analysis, total elapsed time from powder to finished pellet can be less than two minutes.

Safety features include a transparent polycarbonate door with system interlock, and a pump cutoff in case of system or operator error.
