Question: A customer who ordered the following standards wants to know the best way to store his standards: nitrate, nitrite phosphate, and sulfate. Currently he is storing all his standards in the same way: at 4 degrees C +/- 2 degrees. Before he is ready to use the standard, he brings it to room temperature and then runs his analysis. The certificate of analysis does not contain information about storing standards at 4 degrees C. As the manufacturer of the standards, how would you recommend storing the standard?
Answer from our Spectroscopist: As per our Certificate of Analysis, the stock anion standards such as nitrate, nitrite phosphate and sulfate, and others are guaranteed stable to +/- 0.5% of the certified concentration for a period of 1 year if materials are kept tightly capped and stored under normal conditions of temperature (50-80 degree F) and humidity (30-80%). Refrigeration is not required. If for any reason, refrigeration is required bring the standard(s) to room temperature before using.

New Contamination Control Product: OdorEroder™
The OdorEroder™ contains purple beads in a tray that oxidize and neutralize offensive odors and fumes. The tray is placed where odor-causing chemicals in the air passes near the purple beads trapping the chemicals inside and on the surface of the beads, thus eliminating the odors. As the purple beads react, they turn brown. Under normal conditions, the OdorEroder lasts up to two to three months. It is a non-toxic, environmentally safe product that is effective throughout a variety of areas including laboratory areas, hoods, waste disposal areas, chemical storage areas, etc. Click here to order! |

Avoiding the "Class A" Pipette Incident
Recently, our chemists discovered a grave error in Class A pipettes manufactured by a very reputable manufacturer. Our new consignment of 25mL pipettes only delivered 20mL, even though each pipette was labeled 25mL and only differed very slightly in size and shape from the 20mL pipettes. If our Quality Control department did not have such rigorous standards and had not checked each pipette before use, all our standards would have had a 20% error. Thankfully, our protocol does not allow us to just assume glassware and other items are good because they are manufactured by a reputable company, it demands we check and assess before using. We, at SPEX CertiPrep, pride ourselves on delivering quality and accuracy when making our standards by taking the extra necessary steps. Kudos to our Quality Control department for doing such through and meticulous work!

Impacts of US EPA Methods Update Rule (MUR) on NJPDES Permits
The US EPA has issued a final MUR that modifies the list of approved analysis and sampling procedures for wastewater regulations. These updates will have significant effect on the current test procedures for the analysis and sampling for pollutants in wastewater and sludge. As of now, a number of analysis methods have been replaced by alternate more up-to-date methods. In addition, a large number of new test methods have been added. These new changes may impact your laboratorys certification and may require changes in your laboratorys procedures. To learn more on these changes, go to www.state.nj.us/dep/dwq/pdf/MUR_Impact.pdf.

ICP, ICP/ICP-MS, and ICP-MS Grade Certified Reference Materials Is There Really a Difference?
A blind laboratory study was conducted to compare standards obtained from various manufacturers of certified reference materials. There are two goals for this study: First to objectively determine if a difference exists between an ICP grade standard and an ICP-MS grade standard and second to focus on the equivalency of the ICP-MS grade standard to the ICP/ICP-MS grade of standard. Read the Study. |
