Your Science is Our Passion
In the lab, one of the largest expenders of waste energy is the fume hood. To help conserve energy, enclose open hood areas to improve the air flow. If the hood already has a safety sash, make sure that the sash is always positioned at the optimal level for efficiency. Leaving a hood wide open decreases efficiency and causes energy waste.

  Ask a Chemist
Question:  We have a calibration standard containing Acrolein and have observed the response going down quickly (within two weeks) for this compound, can you explain this?

Acrolein can dimerize or break down to form 3-methoxypropanol and dimethyl acetal depending on factors such as storage condition, other compounds is in the solution, the solution matrix itself and of course time. On a typical GC capillary column CV-502.2 for example, the breakdown peaks will show up shortly after the Acrolein. If you have access to a GC/MS you can easily identify Acrolein, major ion 56 and distinct minor ion of 55. The breakdown product 3-methoxypropanol has the major ion of 60 and 45. The breakdown product dimethyl acetal has the major ion of 71 with minor ions of 75 and 41. Acrolein is more stable using methanol for the matrix. We recommend fresh working calibration standards weekly. Our Acrolein at 1000ug/mL in P+T Methanol (Item #: S-175) is made fresh every 90 days to ensure our customers get the highest level standard.

New White Paper!

The Analysis of Laboratory and Consumer Water Sources for the Presence of BPA and Phthalates

SPEX CertiPrep has just released a new white paper on the presence of bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates in water from various laboratory and consumer sources.

The goal of the study was to examine the BPA and phthalate levels of several popular commercial bottled waters in comparison with municipal tap water and various samples of laboratory water from commercial sources and from de-ionized filtration systems. In addition, the study attempted to discover whether the phthalate and BPA levels increased after being heated for one week at temperatures equivalent to those reached inside an automobile during the summer.

You can read the abstract and view the presentation slides. To receive a copy of the full paper, please email crmsales@spexcsp.com or give us a call at 1-800-LAB-SPEX.

Recommended reading: Green Chemistry

Here are two books you can use to learn how to decrease your lab's environmental footprint:

Methods and Reagents for Green Chemistry: An Introduction by Pietro Tundo (Editor), Alvise Perosa, and Fulvio Zecchini is "…a good starting resource for readers seeking to employ sustainable chemistry." (Journal of the American Chemical Society, January 9, 2008).

Green Chemistry Metrics by Alexei Lapkin (Editor) and David Constable (Editor). When devising green chemistry techniques, you need a way to evaluate their "greenness". This book will show you how.

Take our SPEX CertiPrep IQ product survey and you could win an iPod!

We are getting ready to launch our new service, SPEX CertiPrep IQ Custom Standards Kits, and we need your input! As recommended by Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), labs with analytical instruments should follow OQ/PV procedures to ensure their instruments are running in peak condition. Our OQ/PV Custom Standards Kits will be designed to provide your laboratory with a year supply of OQ/PV standards tailored specifically to your needs. We can manufacture the solutions in our ISO 9001-certified facility or you can send us your pre-made bulk solution. Either way, we will package the standards into single use sizes so you can be assured each individual standard will be homogeneous, free of contaminations, and consistent across the packaging run. Let us take the worry out of preparing standards!

Please take a few moments to complete our survey and let us know how to make these products better. Each submission will be entered into a drawing for a free iPod! Take the survey now…
Green Chemistry

The EPA's Green Chemistry Challenge promotes the "design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances." There is only one Earth, and SPEX CertiPrep has embarked on an initiative to minimize our impact on the environment. We will investigate manufacturing techniques that are more environmentally friendly, find ways to minimize chemical waste, and reduce the paper waste generated by our offices. As we learn, we will be offering tips to you, the laboratories, to allow you to start your own green initiatives.

Stay tuned for more detailed information on our efforts!
